Secchi Disk Study

  • Where: Antarctic, Arctic

  • Platform: Small boat, yacht

  • Level: Easy

What is it all about?

The Secchi Disk study is a global citizen science study of marine phytoplankton. The Secchi Disk study was launched in 2013 and has so far, resulted in over 3,000 observations from around the world.

The project can easily be done from a small Zodiac-style boat or yacht where you measure the clarity of the water by identifying the Secchi Depth. This is an indication of phytoplankton abundance.

The aim is to use the collaborative power of citizen scientists to increase the data collected from the oceans to compare to historical Secchi Disk data. This will help expand the Secchi Disk study's long-term dataset enabling scientists to better understand changes in the ocean’s phytoplankton.

Project partners: The Secchi Disk study is an independent study run by The Secchi Disk Foundation, a UK-registered charity.
